Participants learn new skills in the Young at Arts programme

(CNS): Young At Arts (YAA) has opened its registration for talented students aged between 12 and 17 to take part in an award-winning musical production, which will be staged at the Harquail Theatre in August, as part of the six-week Butterfield Summer Intensive theatre arts course. An educational youth programme from the Cayman National Cultural Foundation, the programme aims to train young creative minds in the performing arts and make up for the lack of performing arts opportunities in the schools.

Officials from the programme said it was guided by an “artistic philosophy that recognizes that Caymanian cultural forms and enactments, and their creative interpretation and expression through art, are vital in the moulding of a Caymanian aesthetic.

The course will engage young people in creative activity through theatre practices and create an outlet for those with creative potential. Organisers said it also fills a void left by the lack of adequate performing arts instruction in our schools, creates an audience for the arts and makes use of play scripts from the National Playwriting Competition.

In addition, it helps the CNCF develop a company of talented and disciplined creative artists that can present quality ‘work-shows’ and stage productions that demonstrate acquired knowledge and skills and set the teens on the for further exploration of the arts in adulthood for the students at university and beyond.
