(CNS): The hospital has received a new vehicle specially designed to transport its non-acute patients who are either wheelchair users or need mobility assistance, officials said. The newly designed Ford Transporter was donated by the Caring for Life Foundation (CFLF), the not-for-profit organisation created to raise cash to buy equipment for the HSA.

“This multifunctional vehicle will fill a much-needed void, allowing us to better serve our non-acute patients who have mobility needs,” said Stephen Duval, EMS Manager at the Health Services Authority. “The ramp can hold up to 800 pounds allowing for the various styles of wheelchairs and even a stretcher if needed.”

The Specialist Clinic, Dialysis and Physiotherapy Units of the Health Services Authority all have a considerable number of out-patients who have difficulty with transportation to and from their appointments. But Lizzette Yearwood, Chief Executive of HSA, said access to patient care was among the top priorities for the authority.

“On behalf of the board and staff of the Health Services Authority, I would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to the Caring for Life Foundation and all the corporate sponsors who were involved in making this possible. This is truly an example of the wonderful commitment these businesses and organizations have to our community and the betterment of it.”

The CFLF donations allow the hospital to provide residents and visitors with improved healthcare consistent with advances being made throughout the developed world.

“Since the inception of the Foundation in 2010 equipment has been donated to the HSA every year,” said Kristin Dilbert, Chair of the CFLF said. “This year we are proud to donate a purpose built Non-Emergency vehicle, thanks to our donors and sponsors.”

In 2015-2016, the Board of Trustees of the Caring for Life Committee has an aggressive plan to upgrade certain equipment and facilities at the HSA and will continue to seek the help of the community.  Other sponsors for the latest donation also include the Pink Ladies Volunteer Corp, Flowers Group, Walkers and Rotary Sunrise.

Nancy Whitefield, Chair of the Pink Ladies Volunteer Corp, said they are long-standing supporters of the Health Services Authority

“All of our Pink Ladies were delighted to be able to provide funds to assist with the purchase of the vehicle,” Whitefield said. “It is especially pleasing to be able to give back to the community through this donation.”

Patients who may require use of the vehicle are asked to contact their HSA doctor to determine their eligibility, or section nurse as needs assessment by physicians will be required in addition to the verification of patient’s appointment schedule.
