(CNS): Dalton Watler, president of the Cayman Islands Athletic Association, has earned a sports management degree from the University of Lleida, Spain. Organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the philosophy behind the MEMOS (Executive Masters in Sport Organisations Management) degree is to help professionals working in national or international sports bodies manage their organisations better.

Spread out over 12 months, the course consists of three nine-day residential modules, and a three-day final module devoted to the defence and presentation of the student’s dissertation. The programme is available in English, Spanish and French, and each year participants from around the world are carefully selected to study together.

Watler received an IOC scholarship through the Cayman Islands Olympic Committee, which covered most of the costs associated with the programme.

Participants are also required to do a research project; Watler developed an educational module and programme for the identification and selection of athletes in the Cayman Islands.

“The Olympic ideals and the quality of the programme made a great impression on me,” he said. “It does not matter where you come from for when you love and appreciate sports, we all share the same views and ideals and it was a great learning environment.”
