(CNS): A competition across all of the country’s schools to design a poster about the waste management hierarchy is the first step in what will eventually become a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about generating less rubbish. It is hoped the poster and essay competition which was organised by the Department of Environmental Health and the ministry will inspire the younger generation to consider a future of waste reduction, moving away from the throw-away society.

One hundred and ten students aged six to sixteen from government and private schools took part and submitted work based on the theme ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover, and Dispose Waste Management in the Cayman Islands’, known as the waste management hierarchy, which is now an international structure for reducing landfills.

The 12 finalists in each age group and category and the names of their winning entries were as follows:

In the primary school poster division the winner in 1st place was Raven Rhoden (8), George Town Primary School, ‘Always Remember the Four R’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover’; 2nd place Ella Kane (9), Red Bay Primary School, ‘Oh Sea of Palest Emerald merging to darkest Blue … Our Islands It’s time to start thinking of you!’;  3rd place Witney Nathan-Davis (1)0, Red Bay Primary School, ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover & Dispose Waste Management in the Cayman Islands Newspaper theme.’

  1. Wonderful news! Raising awareness among our children is, indeed, the first step to a better functioning waste management! Recycling is like education – parents are also involved in the process and should always give personal example of how it should be done properly!
