Swimmers await the start of the event

(CNS): A new-look course highlighted the 28th LIME 800m Sea Swim, which drew 106 participants swimming a loop that started and ended at Government House. The loop provided Cayman’s top open-water swimmers and tri-athletes the opportunity to navigate an unfamiliar course, round markers and swim with and against the current. For spectators, it was an easier course to view the whole event and officials benefited from the race starting and finishing at the same place.

Race winner Eddie Weber, of Camana Bay Aquatic Club (CBAC), enjoyed the new course. “It was a great race. I loved the new course because it provided an opportunity to use more strategy around the various buoys and it was a good challenge to swim against the current,” he said.

“It wasn’t just a distance race. Cole (Morgan) and I were really sprinting for the last 50 metres. It was a really close finish.”

Sam Bailey of Stingray Swim Club finished first among the female swimmers.

Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association (CIASA) President Michael Lockwood was also pleased with the event. “CIASA’s open-water swims are a great activity for serious swimmers, athletes who use swimming as a cross-training discipline and families who want to exercise together,” he said, thanking sponsor LIME.

He added, “Thank you, too, to all our swimmers who came out to take part. We had a number of our CARIFTA swimmers, National Development Team swimmers, tri-athletes, Special Olympians, masters swimmers and members of the community who just want to stay fit.”

The next open-water sea swim is the 13th Annual Butterfield 800m set for Saturday, 30 May, which is the last ‘warm-up’ event before the 23rd Flowers One Mile Sea Swim on 13 June.
