Swimmers at the 2014 Lions Sprint Meet

(CNS): The Stingray Swim Club (SSC) is hosting two swim meets this weekend, with events for competitors of all ages and covering a variety of distances. First up is Vigoro Nursery’s Friday Night Lights, a distance meet on 22 May for swimmers aged 11 and over. On 23 May, the Lions Sprint Meet is open to athletes of all ages.

Vigoro Nursery’s Friday Night Lights focuses on the middle to longer distances, allowing swimmers to compete in the 1500m, 800m and 400m freestyle and then 200m in the other events.

At the sprint, swimmers from hosts SSC, Camana Bay Aquatic Club, Treasure Island Swim School and Cayman Brac’s Brac Barracudas will compete for first-place honours.

Stingray head coach David Pursely explained the importance of this meet to the swimming community. “Our older swimmers gain valuable experience competing in these longer distance events. They work on their race strategy, aerobic endurance and technique and then use what they learn to prepare for the larger meets, both here at home and overseas when they compete and represent either their club, or at an international level, Cayman,” he said.

Friday Night Lights swimmers compete for the FINA High Points award, which goes to the entrant whose performance in a single event earns them the highest points. The male and female winners each receive cinema passes for two.

The annual Lions Sprint Meet is a nod to the vision of the club which built the Lions Aquatic Centre, and its members can be found in the timing seats and cheering in the stands. The Stingray Swim Club produces the meet and, along with the Lions, ensures that entry and participation is free to all swimmers.

Stingray vice president Peter Plunkett said the meet is a great community event: “The Lions Sprint Meet is an important one for our club as the Lions Aquatic Centre is the home of the Stingray Swim Club. Our swimmers look forward to this Sprint Meet, as do our parents, volunteers and supporters and we encourage everyone to register and take part in this amazing, community event.

“This is also a great event to come out and watch, and we encourage members of the community to come out and cheer on the athletes. ”

The swim calendar continues with the CIASA Butterfield 800m Sea Swim on 30 May; followed by the multi-distance Landon Von Kanel Memorial Invitational, presented by Coldwell Banker, 4-7 June; and the Flowers One Mile Sea Swim on 13 June.
