(CNS): A parade, presentation ceremony and garden party will mark Cayman’s official celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 89th birthday on Saturday, 13 June. The parade by the uniformed services will kick things off, followed by a brief ceremony at the Legislative Assembly recognising past and current recipients of Queen’s Honours and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Afterwards, there will be a garden party at Government House.

British Empire Medal (BEM) recipient Leonard Hew is set to collect his award from Governor Helen Kilpatrick. Hew is the first Caymanian to receive the BEM since 1993. The UK recently reintroduced the award following a lengthy hiatus.

The governor will also make presentations to the six gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award winners — Samantha Mascarenhas, Adam Jackson, David Terry, and Cayman Island Cadets Corps Sergeant Antanika Ebanks, 2nd Lieutenant Natalie Williams and Lieutenant Corporal Joseph Burey.

Deputy Governor Franz Manderson will then announce the names of those who have received 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

The celebrations start at 9:00am, but official guests should be seated by 8:30am. Covered seating will also be available to members of the public. In case of rain, the venue will shift to the Town Hall next door.

The party on the front lawn of Government House will start at 10:15am. The event is open to the public, and there will be musical entertainment, food and drink.

A semi-formal day dress code will be enforced, with hats optional.

Protocol coordinator Meloney Syms urged members of the public to come with their families to all events. “It is an opportunity for us to come together as a country to celebrate the Queen’s birthday. There will be lots of music and colour and refreshments. We have planned a really enjoyable day for residents of all ages,” she said.
