(CNS): Child Month came to a sweet end 30 May, with the naming of the winners of the third annual Cupcake War competition, held at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman. This year’s challenge paid tribute to the late Wendy Quinland, who co-founded the event as part of Child Month observances, while a community development officer with the Department of Children and Family Services.

The “Cupcake Angels” — Vitoria Buttrum and Leslie Anderson — baked their way to the top, receiving the Wendy Quinland Memorial Trophy from her widower, Peter Quinland, their children and other relatives.

Second place went to “Team Alex” — Alexandra Nairne, Keilli Powell, Annissa Sheow-Clarke and Victoria Nairne. The Cayman Brac team, “Cupcake Noveau” — Alex Flores, Dimitri Christian and Wezleyann Pryce — placed third. The Kiwanis Club and the Ministry of District Administration sponsored that team’s travel to Grand Cayman.

Head judge Melissa Logan, The Ritz-Carlton’s executive pastry chef, compared tastes and presentation along with fellow judges Daniella McGowan (president-elect of Kiwanis Club) and Georganne Rankine (the Youth Services Unit’s culinary consultant). They announced the rankings after hours of preparation, baking and tastings.

Also competing were “Cupcake Warriors” — Tya Bovell, Nickola O’Sullivan, Ashley Thompson and Britiny McLaughlin; and “Team Brittney” — Brittney Bodden, D’Angelo Roper, Kiahna Tibbetts and Tamia McLean.
