Governor Helen Kilpatrick presents British Empire Medal to Leonard Hew

(CNS): The Queen’s birthday was once again celebrated with plenty of pomp and circumstance, highlighted by a parade and an awards ceremony. A 21-gun salute honoured Queen Elizabeth II for her 89th birthday with the RCIPS marching band and guard of honour leading the procession of uniformed services organisations and war veterans.

Governor Helen Kilpatrick presented Leonard Hew with the British Empire Medal in recognition of his service to sport and the Cayman Islands community in general. Hew is the first Caymanian to receive the BEM since 1993. The UK recently reintroduced the award following a lengthy hiatus.

Dan Scott, managing partner of accounting firm Ernst & Young and chairman of the Cayman Islands Judicial and Legal Services Commission, received the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for services to the local financial services industry and the judiciary.

Derek Haines, who made headlines in 2014 for running six marathons and raising more than $1 million to build a new facility for Cayman HospiceCare, was named a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Haines, who is senior manager, security and community relations, at Dart Enterprises, was honoured for his service to the community and sports.

Rudy Myles, who is LIME’s regional fraud manager, was awarded the Cayman Islands Certificate and Badge of Honour for his contribution to the arts. Myles has for years sung at various events, including governmental and political functions, pageants, international conferences, weddings and funerals.

The traditional garden party on the grounds of Government House followed the ceremony.
