(CNS): One lucky ticket holder won the grand prize of a car in the Rotary Sunrise annual raffle, with the funds raised supporting literacy projects and various community-service initiatives.

Glen Trenouth is now the owner of a 2015 Audi Q5, valued at $55,750. Pavel Rameau won the second prize of a home security system from Scott Security worth $3,000. Roy McTaggart’s ticket was drawn for third prize, which was $1,000 worth of gasoline from Rubis.

Christine Matthews, who will be president of Rotary Sunrise for 2015-16, explained how the funds raised will be spent. “The annual car raffle is our major fundraiser and allows Rotary Sunrise to support several projects in Cayman, many focused on literacy,” she said.

“We are a major financial supporter of LIFE, the literacy non-profit organisation we created three years ago. We purchase supplemental reading books for students, furnish new dictionaries for incoming high school students, and support efforts to grow school libraries. Our community-service projects include park clean-ups, community Christmas parties, and fundraising for the global effort to eradicate polio.”

Arch Automotive, BritCay and MEPCO were major sponsors of this year’s raffle, with the winning tickets drawn at the Island Living Show at Camana Bay on Saturday, 28 June.

Kim Remizowski, the outgoing club president for 2014-15, added, “Thousands of tickets were purchased by people who want to help Rotary Sunrise support these vital programs. One hundred percent of the raffle proceeds go toward our service efforts including sponsorships like the upcoming Culinary Camp for kids and an August youth leadership conference.”

He thanked the Rotarians who put in countless hours selling tickets, arranging displays of the car and promoting the service projects done by all of the Rotary and Rotaract Clubs in the Cayman Islands.
