Students’ artwork on display at the “Kaleidoscope” exhibition

(CNS): The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) and Walkers held an end-of-year celebration for art students and their parents, and showcased the young people’s artwork in the Dart Auditorium/Community Gallery.

The students had participated in the free weekly after-school Walkers Art Clubs held at the NGCI over the school year.

Mark Lewis, senior partner from Walkers, told those gathered, “This year the National Gallery have named the exhibition ‘Kaleidoscope’ – a good name indeed – as the exhibition really is a kaleidoscope of over 50 vibrant artwork displays, covering a cross-section of styles such as drawing, printmaking, painting, assemblage art and batik.”

Now in their 10th year, the after-school clubs sponsored by Walkers benefit approximately 120 students each week, and comprise pre-schoolers, primary and secondary school students from Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac, teens who are studying for their final exams, and young people with special needs.

“The programme provides a unique opportunity for students from public and private schools to interact, work collaboratively and forge new friendships,” Lewis said, adding, “I would like to thank the National Gallery for supporting the programme, for providing first-rate instruction to the students and for exhibiting this unique collection of children’s artwork, which really does reflect the artistic talent of children in the Cayman Islands.”

The exhibition, which is free, will run until Saturday, 20 June 2015.
