Budding musicians at the “Spark! Music Initiative” camp

(CNS): A free camp, attended by about 175 students, has been running all week focusing on various aspects of musical learning. The “Spark! Music Initiative” camp will be closing tonight (10 July) with a concert at the Prospect Primary School hall, starting at 7pm.

Spark! Music Initiative is a non-profit organisation, which looks to advocate for music education for all students. The group is striving to become a force in music education by offering students the opportunity to participate in free music camps and workshops.

For the past week, nine teachers from the United States provided activities that focused on world music, music technology, improvisation and songwriting. The concert will showcase the students’ musical learning through group performance, as well as highlighting student compositions and improvisational skills.

Priscilla Blanco, who is a director and founder of the organisation, said, “In a quick amount of time, students have acclimated themselves to the structure of the camp and through this opportunity they have been able to experience music making in a slightly different way – in a way that they can actually be creative and express themselves.”

Janelle Tibbetts, who is also a director and founder, added, “This has truly been an amazing experience for all persons involved, students and teachers alike. We are grateful to the corporate community for believing in what we do and assisting us to provide the opportunity free of cost to our students, thus ensuring it was accessible to all.”

She continued, “As teachers, we have basked in amazement at the accomplishments of our students, and how music unlocked self-expression, intelligence and creativity this week. As we watched them, we learned quickly that the skills they gained in these four days were not only musical, but also skills for life.”

The project was facilitated through donations from Caribbean Utilities Company, Cayman Airways, Cico Avis, Economy Car Rental, Cayman Vacation Shoppers, Kirk Market, Domino’s Pizza, Rum Point Restaurant, and South Coast Bar and Grill. In addition, the Ministry of Education, Employment and Gender Affairs and the Lions Club of Grand Cayman supported this event.
