(CNS): Organisers of the recent inaugural CayFilm Cayman International Film Festival will be introducing a best local filmmaker award, named after Caymanian filmmaker, director and screenwriter Frank E. Flowers, and presented for the first time at the 2016 festival.

Festival director Tony Mark explained the reasons for the new award. “Frank E. is the pioneer of Cayman’s filmmaking industry; he started it all, and so it is fitting that any award that honours local filmmaking or filmmakers should also pay tribute in some way to the tremendous contribution he has made and the impact and influence he continues to have,” he said.

“We actually did present five local filmmakers with awards for their work this year but the Frank E. Flowers Cayman Filmmaker Award just makes it a bit more official and formal, and I am looking forward to sitting down with Frank E. to establish the criteria for this accolade that he inspired.”

Although he was unable to attend the first CayFilm festival, Flowers has given his full support to the event and its vision, and has been involved behind the scenes since the early stages.

“The Cayman Islands and filmmaking are two of my great loves, and it’s been inspiring to see that culture evolve,” said Flowers. “I am humbled to be named on an award which supports the vision of promoting and celebrating local talent.”
