(CNS): The recent annual walk/run organised by the Lions Club of Grand Cayman to promote awareness of men’s cancers raised about CI$40,000.

The 4th Annual Delano Hislop Memorial 3-Day Journey for Life Walk/Run, which took place last month, is organised as part of the organisation’s PACCE (Prostate and Colon Cancer Event) campaign to educate people on the effects and possible prevention of diseases that primarily affect men’s health, starting with prostate, colon and testicular cancers.

Out of the funds raised from the race, the Lions Club donated $20,000 to the Cayman Islands Cancer Society (CICS), $10,000 to Cayman HospiceCare and the remainder towards the club’s future awareness ventures.

The club is focusing on creating awareness among the male population to debunk some of the dangerous myths that prevent many individuals from getting checked for such diseases as prostate cancer. Since the first year of this programme, there has been a significant increase in PSA (prostate-specific antigen) testing, which is offered free of charge at PACCE awareness meetings and at CICS.

The organisation continues to work to increases awareness of various male diseases to the local community, including disseminating information regarding early detection and possible prevention.
