Young presenters at the UWC summer programme

(CNS): United World Colleges (UWC) Cayman Islands has hosted its inaugural summer short course, “Toward a Sustainable Future”, aimed at broadening the reach of the institution.

“This is the first year our national committee hosted a local short course to bring the UWC mission and values to a wider audience,” explained UWC Cayman Islands chairperson Aubrey Bodden.

“This overnight camp included informative seminars and unique activities, and we are so grateful to our corporate sponsors, who allowed us to charge a low tuition fee and also award full scholarships to nearly all of our participants so that cost was not a barrier to attend.”

The Water Authority-Cayman was one of the corporations who supported the programme, donating $2,500 to become a silver sponsor.

Water Authority director Dr. Gelia Frederick-van Genderen explained that the board was proud to sponsor the short course, especially considering its focus on the values of sustainability and youth education.

“Part of the authority’s mission is the protection of groundwater resources in the Cayman Islands and sponsoring programmes like the UWC Cayman Islands short course go a long way in helping young people understand the role their generation has to play in building a sustainable future,” she said.

The authority also donated USB drives, which UWC Cayman Islands used to provide participants with digital copies of all of the presentations given throughout the course.
