Women’s football to get more attention

(CNS): The beleaguered local football association is hoping to raise the importance of the women’s game by introducing a female charity shield match and moving the senior league schedule to Sunday evenings alongside the men’s game. In a circular released by the acting CIFA president, Bruce Blake, who is now working full-time at the association after giving up his law career to focus on football, said the goal was to showcase both men’s and women’s football together.

The inaugural Women’s Charity Shield match, which will be between Sunset FC and Scholars International SC, will kick off at 5pm, Sunday, 11 October at the TE McField Stadium (the Annex).

“We will also be moving the CIFA Senior Women’s League competition to Sunday evenings, alongside the Cayman Premier League,” Blake said. “The reasons for the change are to highlight the importance and status of our Senior Women’s League and to showcase both of our premier leagues on the same day and venues.”

Women’s League matches will now play at both 5pm and 7pm at three venues each week to accommodate both leagues.  The Senior Women’s League will start Sunday, 25 October. Clubs will be able to register players for this league until Friday, 16 October.
