(CNS): A local politician and a police officer will be squaring up for charity next month with a three-round bout during a boxing event being hosted by the Cayman Islands Boxing Association. The show will feature a team from the Bahamas vs the Cayman Islands and as well as local boxers such as Hopkins Ebanks and Tafari Ebanks, MLA Alva Suckoo and police officer Michael “Bobby” Peart will take to the ring at the Lions Centre on 17 October.

At 6ft tall and weighing in at 210lbs, Peart (48) will be up against Suckoo (44), who is 5ft 8in, 212lbs. While not the headline act, the fight should attract plenty of attention, which Suckoo hopes will convert into cash for the sport.

“I have agreed to do this fight so that I can solicit sponsors for the event and raise funds to assist with the development of boxing here in Cayman,“ said Suckoo, who is a big fan of boxing. He said he wants to donate funds towards the establishment of a proper training facility in Bodden Town, which will serve as both a boxing gym and a community gym for anyone who wants to stay fit and healthy.

“I have been involved in amateur boxing for a number of years now and I train regularly at the gym with the boxing team. I have seen the sport grow in leaps and bounds and I have seen the local boxers improve to where they are now fighting and beating the best amateur boxers in the world. I have no doubt that Cayman will medal at the Olympics in the near future,” the politician added.

The MLA believes there is a lot of untapped boxing talent in Cayman and says there are at least a dozen very talented boxers in his Bodden Town constituency who have shown an interest in the sport.

“But without a facility to train in the district, it is difficult for them to benefit,” he said. “The personal discipline, exercise, healthy lifestyle and commitment that boxing encourages will benefit our community and give our young men especially a positive outlet that is currently missing from the district.”

Suckoo said his opponent might be four years his senior but Peart has been involved in boxing for much longer and has contributed tremendously to the development of the programme. Urging people to support the event, he said potential sponsors can contact him directly at alvas@ppm.ky.

Tickets for the full boxing event are on sale and can be purchased at Jacques Scott, Joe-Enas and Pop-a-Top.

I would love to come out and support this worthy cause but as a driftwood gay i’m sure my money is considered unclean and therefore unwelcome.

Just goes to show what kind of person you are. You want to promote your gay rights agenda instead of supporting young Caymanians, By the way Alvas father is a “driftwood” so where do you get off making that comment? Learn who your Politicians are – it was not him that made the “driftwood” comment. Secondly, he never attacked anyone for being gay, he simply said he cannot support changing the definition of marriage to include same-sex. I fully support and agree with him and thank God so do most Caymanians. Why do you want to come here and tell our elected representatives what to do and say? He represents all Caymanians including the gay ones and he stated that on the talk show recently. I salute leaders like Mr Suckoo, they are cut from a different cloth and are true to their word. He knew he would be attacked for standing up for our Christian beliefs and he did it anyway, that in my opinion is the mark of a true leader.

Maybe if they worked out more like this (the police) they could get off their fat asses and catch physically harming criminals instead of people who keep their “crimes” to themselves
