(CNS): The Young Caymanian Leaders Foundation said it received and reviewed 39 nominations from the community for this year’s annual award. The committee has narrowed the list to Taylor Burrows-Nixon, 36, of George Town; Robbie Crib, 25, of South Sound; Rebekah Jefferson, 33, of West Bay; and Kellie McGee, 27, and Stephen Watler, 35, both of Savannah, with these five young people going head to head for the local YCLA title next month.

“We received a record number of nominations this year, more than in any prior year, making the task of the committee more challenging than ever,” said Jonathan Tibbetts, chairman of the selection committee, about the 15th year of the award.

“It is so encouraging to discover such a large number of positive, inspiring young people who are eager to serve as role models for the next generation. Narrowing the field to five finalists was a difficult task, but we are now looking forward to introducing them to the broader community.”

Each nominee’s candidacy is vetted to meet the criteria which the committee claims add up to “a well-rounded young person who demonstrates strong leadership skills and the ability to serve as a role model to Cayman’s youth”.

Among the qualities sought are outstanding moral character, personal and professional achievement, volunteerism and community involvement, and a strong overall commitment to mentoring young people.

Whoever receives the gong can look forward to a year speaking to young people all over the islands in an effort to inspire them.

The YCLA gala at which the winner will be announced is scheduled for Saturday, 17 October at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.

YCLA director Jackie Hansen said that 70 young Caymanians have been recognised over the last 15 years as finalists, and most are still serving in the community.
