(CNS): A teacher at Cayman’s First Baptist Christian School was named class valedictorian out of 650 students across the Caribbean graduating from the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus in 2015.   Nadesha Edwards, who graduated with a first class honours degree in early childhood development and family studies, delivered the speech at the ceremony held Saturday, 10 October in Antigua.

Edwards is one of eight students (five undergraduate and three postgraduate) to graduate from the UWI Cayman Islands site this year. The other seven graduates were Dwight Cummings (Certificate in Human Resource Management); Maureen Robinson (Diploma in Early Childhood Development); Cassius Feare (Bachelor of Education – Secondary Maths Education); Andrea Wray Miller (Bachelor of Education – Secondary Maths Education); Maxine Green Gayle (Masters in Education – Literacy Instruction); Kurt McKenzie (Masters in Education – Adult and Continuing Education); and Kimberly Ebanks (Post Graduate Diploma Literacy Instruction).

In congratulating these eight graduates, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks, manager for the UWI Open Campus British Overseas Territories, who has responsibility for the Cayman Islands site, said that UWI Open Campus Cayman was delighted that the students were amongst the top achievers in the region. “We are also particularly pleased that our own Nadesha Edwards captured the coveted title of valedictorian,” she said.

The UWI representative pointed out that as the fourth and youngest campus of the 67-year-old university, the UWI Open Campus was charged with offering multi-mode teaching and learning services through virtual and physical site locations across the Caribbean. She added she was happy that increasing numbers of Caymanians and Cayman residents are using this affordable means to pursue tertiary level education.
