Elite (in blue) and Academy in action Sunday

(CNS): With a 5-0 victory at home over Academy on Sunday, 18 October, Elite have found themselves at the top of the premier league after the CIFA season opened this weekend. Dwayne “Gaza” Wright bagged a hat trick to lead the scoring. Defending league champions Scholars managed to defeat Roma 1-0 in an away game for them, while Cayman Athletic enjoyed a close match and a 3-2 victory over George Town, and Sunset won their away fixture at Bodden Town 1-0.

With football in the news for all the wrong reasons lately, the controversial and costly $2 million pitch at CIFA’s Centre of Excellence was also officially opened on Saturday in Prospect. The long-awaited playing field has taken years as the swampy conditions make a grass pitch virtually impossible. The pitch will now provide a training ground for the national teams and the youth league games. It will also be rented out to the public.

CIFA has also turned its attention recently to a new code for players and officials regarding racism. A recent circular which states that any player, coach, manager, member or executive of a club who insults the human dignity of a person or group of persons on whatever grounds, including skin colour, race, religion or ethnic origin, incurs a suspension lasting at least 10 matches or a specified period of time, or any other appropriate sanction.
