(CNS): To mark the 25th anniversary of the Cayman Islands National Museum, the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA) is launching a commemorative silver coin today (20 November). The official launch will take place at the museum from 6pm-8pm, during a preview session for their anniversary exhibition.

The coin has a face value of CI$5 and a fineness of .925 sterling silver. Minted by The Royal Mint in the UK, only 250 coins are being issued. The coin features the 25th anniversary logo – which includes a depiction of the museum building – in full colour on one side and the Cayman Islands Coat of Arms and the words “Cayman Islands Five Dollars” on the other.

Cayman News ServiceThese coins – priced at CI$73.34, or US$90, each – will go on sale Monday, 23 November, at the CIMA Currency Division window, located on the first floor of the Government Administration Building. The museum will also be selling a limited number of the anniversary coins in their gift shop.

Cindy Scotland, CIMA managing director, said about the launch: “The Cayman Islands National Museum’s mission to celebrate the unique natural and cultural heritage of our three Islands is of national importance. I am pleased that CIMA and the National Museum were able to collaborate on the release of the museum’s 25th anniversary coin.”

CIMA provides the public with collector coins through its creative numismatic programmes. These uncirculated proof coins are designed to commemorate significant local and international events.

The National Museum building, at about 180 years old, is the oldest public edifice in the Cayman Islands. The building is historically significant, having previously served as the location for the courthouse and jailhouse, the first post office, the earliest Commissioner’s offices, the public library, a savings bank, a schoolroom, a church hall, a dancehall, and the Lands and Survey Department.
