Local runner going the distance for charity

| 03/12/2015

Cayman News Service(CNS): Patrice Donalds will be running a half marathon Sunday, 6 December, to raise awareness and funds for the Estella Scott-Roberts Foundation (ESRF). She is seeking donations for her efforts based on estimates for her expected finishing time at the Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon.

To help enhance the vision of the foundation, which supports women and children within the community, and seeks gender equality and a life free of violence for all, Donalds is seeking pledges to predict her finishing time; she is hoping to complete the distance in under two hours and 30 minutes, with her maximum time three hours and 30 minutes.

Pledges are based on a donor’s best guess as to how long it will take Donalds to run the half marathon. The person who guesses the closest – within 10 minutes – to her actual completion time will be the winner and participate in the cheque presentation to the ESRF.

All pledges/guesses must be made in person at the Quick Images office on Dorcy Drive by 4 December or by email by midnight 6 December, with payment due 7 December. Cheques should be made payable to the Estella Scott-Roberts Foundation.

Supporting the work of the ESRF is a very personal cause for Donalds, who was once the victim of domestic abuse. She understands the importance of having a strong support system when fearing for the life and the safety of yourself and your family.

Scott-Roberts was an outspoken leader in the area of women and children’s issues and rights in the Cayman Islands.  Known throughout the community for her involvement in the establishment and management of the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre, she served for five years as the executive director of the first and only 24-hour shelter for abused women and their children.

Scott-Roberts tragically became the most well-known victim of this type of crime, when on the night of 10 October 2008, after celebrating her 33rd birthday, she was abducted, raped and murdered.

Her husband, Rayle Roberts, described her life as a light that shone brilliantly, highlighting the many dark recesses of society.  Roberts envisioned creating an organisation that would continue to address the social issues that she passionately supported, and three weeks after her death, he founded the non-profit Estella Scott-Roberts Foundation.

The ESRF’s main function is to provide funds, in the form of grants, to organisations that work towards achieving the foundation’s vision.
