(CNS): The ‘50/50’ $50,000 marathon appeal to raise funds towards programmes for children supported by the Special Needs Foundation of Cayman (SNFC) has passed its target. More than 50 runners signed up to participate in the various races involved in the initiative (marathon, half marathon or relay) and all helped in collecting donations.

The Rotary Clubs of Grand Cayman and Grand Cayman Central supported the appeal, with members from both organisations also taking part in the races.

Local veteran runner Derek Haines spearheaded the effort and, though disappointed that he had to pull out of the marathon only .6 of a mile from the finish due to suffering from heat exhaustion and dehydration, he said he was delighted that the SNFC received such solid support.

“I am very grateful to all of the very generous donors who have yet again dug deep to help a local charity in its efforts to improve the lives of children with special needs,” Haines said.

“My heartfelt thanks also go to those who took part on marathon day. Not only did they raise funds but, significantly, they raised awareness of what the SNFC does for the Cayman community.”

SNFC executive leader Susie Bodden said she was extremely pleased with the result. “The response to this appeal has been fantastic and the funds will be used for our respite care programme, equine therapy, family support, and a sports and leisure club. I could not ask for a better Christmas present,” she said.
