(CNS):  Philip West beat out six other candidates recently to secure the Assistant Collector of Customs (ACC) post in his second go at trying out for the management position. Senior customs officer of the year in 2014, West has served more than 24 years in the department. As a certified instructor he has played a key role in training junior officers but has also kept up his own professional development in leadership and management, K-9 drug detection, advanced narcotic-interdiction training, firearms training, and tactical self-defence.

Instrumental in acquiring the scanning equipment that pre-screens containers for contraband including firearms and ammunition, West has also completed training in goods scanning safety and operation, the unit that he headed up before his promotion.

Collector of Customs Charles Clifford said he was pleased to welcome West to the management team and was looking forward to working with him “to further national security of our country.”

West said he was delighted with the opportunity to serve and offered this advice to young Caymanians:  “Never give up! This was my second time applying for the ACC position and this time, seven persons had applied. Work hard and your worth will be noticed and appreciated.”
