(CNS): The first ever Poinciana film music and arts festival kicks-off this weekend to showcase the diversity of artists in the Cayman Islands. The event is spearheaded by local film maker Badir Awe, who has ambitions to make the uniquely Caymanian festival a premier event in the Caribbean cultural calendar and says the goal is to highlight today’s local talent.

“The goal of Poinciana is to make Cayman realize that we have, right here on island, a plethora of local talent,” Awe told CNS ahead of the event. “For some reason this remains unknown or undiscovered but the truth is, we have an emerging art scene.”

Over 100 artists are taking part over the whole weekend, which will include music, film and awards. The main event begins Friday in downtown George Town with a street party, where over 30 local musicians will play across three stages in the heart of the capital. On Saturday the cinema at Camana Bay will be running dozens of short local films, music videos and documentaries across three screens culminating in the premiere of the local film, Self Prescribed, with an after party at Abacus.

Various artists will be honoured on Sunday in an awards ceremony at the Harquail Theatre, where Cayman’s top talent will be celebrated. Awe said by being authentically Caymanian, this unique and diverse festival could become the premier cultural event of the region.
