The Backyard Farmers Market on the Brac

(CNS): The first Backyard Farmers Market was held Saturday, 6 February, on Cayman Brac, which organisers declared a success despite the relatively few vendors that came out to sell their products.  In the end, the mix of residents and tourists who comprised the customers at the market purchased everything that was for sale.

The idea of the market is to provide local farmers and fishermen, who do not need a trade and business licence, with a venue to showcase and sell their goods and produce. The market is a community project that organisers hope will continue to expand, with the goal of generating increased interest in local produce. They point out that anyone can be a backyard farmer; all they need is a tree full of fruit.

After the launch, the organisers received enquiries from potential vendors about taking part in future markets, which will be held every Saturday except for the day of the Cayman Brac Agriculture Show, which is set for 27 February.
