Prospect Primary students recycling phone books

(CNS): From now until 18 March, the Cayman Islands Yellow Pages is holding their annual recycling programme for the ubiquitous telephone directories. The “Yellow2Green” initiative encourages the community to collect and recycle their old phone books so they can be converted into usable material. To date the exercise has kept more than 150,000 directories out of the George Town landfill.

The directory company said the goals of the “Yellow2Green” programme are to increase environmental awareness and protection; educate children on the importance, benefits and responsibilities of recycling to both their community and the environment; and reduce waste in the landfill.

The initiative includes the Yellow2Green School Challenge, in which primary schools take part in a friendly competition to win cash prizes. The school that collects the most directories — per student body — wins, with first, second and third prizes of $1,500, $1000 and $700, respectively.

In addition, each participating school will reward the class that collects the most directories with a Subway sandwich party. The top three students, across the entire programme, will also win gift certificates to Books & Books.

Yellow2Green recycling containers can be found at Foster’s Food Fair at the Airport Centre, The Strand, Republix Plaza and Countryside Shopping Village; Hurley’s Supermarket; and in Camana Bay, Mail Boxes Etc, Regal Cinemas and the Yellow Pages office.

At the end of the programme, the directories will be sent by Thompson Shipping to GreenFiber, which will convert the phone books into a material that will be used for home insulation that aids in energy efficiency.

Melanie Shambaugh, marketing manager for Cayman Islands Yellow Pages, thanked all the corporate sponsors of the recycling programme. “We appreciate the support from all our partners. Their participation has allowed us to create a great program and we’re grateful to be part of a community united by our commitment to environmental responsibility,” she said.
