Miss Cayman Islands Monyque Brooks

(CNS): Miss Cayman Islands Monyque Brooks will help launch the GAB Walk Run Club’s Off the Couch programme on Monday evening (29 February). Brooks, who works in the Department of Tourism, will join Deputy Governor Franz Manderson to kick-start the eight-week programme, aimed at all fitness levels from beginning walkers to seasoned runners.

Organisers describe it as an ideal opportunity to get in shape for the Deputy Governor’s 5K Challenge in April, which aims to raise $50,000 towards Cayman Heart Fund’s appeal to buy a new ambulance for the Cayman Islands. The 5K Challenge is the only event of its kind on-island which has a built-in training programme for participants.

“I invite all staff in the civil service to take part, as well as walkers and runners from the private sector and other members of the public,” said Manderson. “Friends and family are encouraged to come along, too.”

The deputy governor has personally benefitted from walking and running, improving his own health through exercise, and is a regular participant in charity 5Ks around the island.

The GAB Walk Run Club was launched in March 2014 ahead of the inaugural Deputy Governor’s 5K Challenge as a training initiative for participants. However, it proved so popular that the club has continued to meet weekly on Monday evenings since then.

Off the Couch, which is free, will have three walking and running options tailored to suit different fitness levels, following various routes. Anyone interested in joining is to meet at the staff entrance of the Government Administration Building on Elgin Avenue on Monday, 29 February at 5:15pm.

The 2016 Deputy Governor’s 5K Challenge will be held in Cayman Brac on Sunday, 17 April and Grand Cayman on Sunday, 24 April, both starting at 6:30am. Registration details will be announced nearer the time.
