(CNS): Monyque Brooks (24) from West Bay was crowned the new Miss Cayman Islands on Saturday at the annual beauty pageant at the Lions Centre. Brooks also won Best Gown, Best Smile and Miss Photogenic. The runners up were Erin Hislop and Schilo Scott. However, the People’s Choice Award went to a contestant totally overlooked by the judges, Samantha Rea from George Town, who not only failed to make the top three in the judges eyes but also missed out on the other in contest titles.

Miss Congeniality, decided by the contestants, was given to Shanice Kelly, while Jamie Rogers won Best Legs. Other contests that failed to make the scoreboard included Latrese Haylock and Theresa Cole.

Brooks, who will go on to compete in the Miss Universe pageant at the end of this year in Las Vegas, has a degree in hospitality and currently works at the Department of Tourism. Although Brooks is young enough to compete in the Miss World pageant, the date and the destination for the competition has not been set.

I think all the young ladies are beautiful and bright. Congrats to the winner. However if Cayman wants to compete on the world stage they must have a better understanding of the criteria to become Ms World. Those choosing any Ms Cayman should try to understand what that criteria is. We have as beautiful women as any but they need to understand the commitment to getting their contestants ready for the challenge. Weight and height restrictions are real factors in this game, as is decorum. Good luck to our new Ms Cayman who I am sure will go on to do well but remember the real work is just beginning.

Or everyone could get a life and forget about this outdated object lesson in sexism. There is a “Best Legs” competition for goodness sake.

tiresome event that delivers little to anybody involved….including the winner…

Samantha is a fox, Samantha Fox! Clear winner, not that it matters, last years runner up was the clear winner too.

This is by far the most beautiful line-up of young ladies in a long time. Congratulations to the winner, lovely. However, how Miss Rea wasn’t picked is beyound me. She is right up there with the past Miss Universe contestants/winners, beautiful. Victoria Secrets is missing an angel. Miss Cole is absolutely gorgeous and should have been placed. Anyway, this is Cayman and nothing escapes corruption. It is time to get rid of those old yesterday’s wanted to be. One word of advice is to invite and randomly choose a panel made up of visitors to the island for the night of the contest. That should give all the girls a better chance of a fair contest.

What is like living with 1970s attitudes in the second decade of the 21st century?

What we need is a Mr. Cayman Competition. Same format, no musclebound posers with steroid-shrunken whotsits. (Remember that babe a few years ago with the fake nuclear knockers?)
The format is formal evening wear, beachwear, educational/professional aspirations, etc.
I propose a surprise category whereby user-submitted questions are drawn out of a hat.
Maybe would should have the competitions on the same day?

How horribly demeaning towards us all.

    A national disgrace.

And yes there is a Government sponsored event in 2016 that has a “Best Legs” award. A true disgrace.
