Prince Edward with Governor Helen Kilpatrick upon his arrival at Owen Roberts International Airport

(CNS): The Earl and Countess of Wessex have completed a quick visit to the Cayman Islands, arriving Sunday, 6 March, and leaving the following day. Governor Helen Kilpatrick and Premier Alden McLaughlin were among those who greeted the couple at Owen Roberts International Airport, before Prince Edward and Sophie departed for Little Cayman by private charter.

Girl Guide Carrie McCoy, 17, presented Sophie with flowers before the prince received the royal salute from a police guard of honour. The couple then met government ministers, MLAs and their spouses in the airport’s VIP lounge.

On Little Cayman, the royals’ greeting party included Deputy Premier Moses Kirkconnell; Minister for Financial Services, Commerce and Environment Wayne Panton; Dr Carrie Manfrino, president of the Central Caribbean Marine Institute (CCMI); and Chris Humphries, CCMI chairman.

Later in the day, the couple toured the marine institute, where Prince Edward has been patron since he visited the Cayman Islands in 2003.

The couple spent the rest of the day on private visits, returning to Grand Cayman yesterday (7 March), where they attended separate luncheons. Prince Edward joined Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme participants at Government House and Sophie briefly addressed 100 Women in Hedge Funds at the National Gallery.

She then rejoined her husband at Government House for the presentation of the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award to Lashonda Powell, before they left Cayman later that afternoon.

The youngest of the Queen’s four children, this was Prince Edward’s fifth trip to Cayman but it is the first time his wife has accompanied him.
