Prospect Primary student Nicolai Christian, 9, takes notes while on the mangrove tour

(CNS): A group of Prospect Primary School students examined Cayman’s mangrove ecosystem on Friday, 4 March, during a boat outing in the North Sound. In addition to the mangroves, the students learned about related marine and terrestrial life as well as other elements of the sea.

Cathy Childs, of the National Trust for the Cayman Islands, spoke to the students both in and out of class about one of Cayman’s delicate ecosystems, as part of the organisation’s Environmental Programme.

This section of the public-school curriculum is presented to year-five students, on topics including mangroves, the water cycle and climate issues.

The Caribbean Utilities Company has been funding the project for the past 14 years.
