(CNS): A series of free workshops on filmmaking and acting is being offered ahead of the CayFilm Cayman International Film Festival in July. CayFilm’s organisers, in partnership with the Cayman Media Academy, Cayman National Cultural Foundation, Friends of Film and the National Gallery, will be holding three workshops over three months which are open to people of all skill levels and experience who are interested in learning how to make a short film, write a screenplay or act.

Festival director Tony Mark, who will be conducting the workshops, said, “There are a lot of talented people on this island who may have a desire to make a short film or write a script for a movie but they’re just not sure where to start; these workshops are for those people.

“I’m hoping that some more film submissions for CayFilm will come out of these workshops. We had 50 films from local filmmakers submitted for the 2015 festival and we would like to see at least the same response again this year.”

CayFilm is accepting film submissions at the Film Freeway website

The workshops are:

Saturday, 19 March; 2:00pm to 4:30pm at the National Gallery

“Making a Short Film”

Whether you are already making movies or would like to start, there will be something for everyone. Learn about the three Ps of making a film: pre-production, production and post-production. Topics will include lighting techniques, tricks of the trade that will give short films a professional polish and industry secrets that will get films festival-ready.

Saturday, 30 April; 2:00pm to 4:30pm at the National Gallery

“Writing a Screenplay”

Whether a first-time writer or seasoned novelist, you can learn techniques for breaking down your story and using the proper format to deliver a professional screenplay. Hear about ways to be able to write quickly and effectively while developing strong characters and deep structured plots for either short films or full-length features.

Saturday, 21 May; 2:00pm to 4:30pm at The Studio, Harquail Theatre

“Acting for the Screen”

CayFilm will soon be bringing some film production companies to Cayman. This workshop offers the chance to learn some acting techniques to prepare for their arrival. You will learn the differences between screen acting and stage acting. All experiences are welcome as everyone will take home something from this workshop including a video of each participant acting out a scene.

CayFilm takes place from 1-4 July, and includes daily film screenings, question-and-answer sessions with filmmakers, panel discussions, workshops, exclusive premiere screenings and two celebrity gala events.

Highlights of the festival include a Star Wars cast-and-crew reunion and the presentation of a lifetime achievement award to film producer Robert Watts, who worked on the original three instalments of that franchise. More A-list celebrity names should be announced in the coming weeks.
