(CNS): Cayman’s young athletes are preparing to compete this weekend for a place in the 2016 CARIFTA Games to be held in Granada 26-28 March. The Cayman Islands Athletic Association, in partnership with Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC), is presenting the 2016 CUC Youth & Junior CARIFTA Track & Field Championships on Friday and Saturday, 11-12 March, at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.

This meet has traditionally been the final qualifier for athletes to make the CARIFTA team.

CUC’s sponsorship of athletics began in 1979 with the first Cayman Islands team to participate in the CARIFTA Games. Since the inception of the championships, for which this event will mark CUC’s 30th year as the major sponsor, several notable junior athletes have advanced and represented the Cayman Islands at various CARIFTA Games.

Events begin at 5pm on Friday, and 3pm on Saturday.
