(L-R) The Commonwealth, Cayman Islands and UK flags fly in front of the Government Administration Building

(CNS): As part of the “Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth” worldwide initiative, at exactly 10am yesterday (Monday, 14 March), Governor Helen Kilpatrick hoisted the blue-and-yellow colours of the Commonwealth flag in front of the Government Administration Building. The event marked the first time the Cayman Islands has joined Commonwealth countries and organisations in raising the flag to celebrate Commonwealth Day.

Emceed by Cabinet Secretary Samuel Rose, the programme included a reading of the Commonwealth affirmation by Premier Alden McLaughlin. In addition, the honorary representative of the Royal Commonwealth Society in the Cayman Islands, Lemuel Hurlston, read a message from Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma.

Organised by the Protocol Office, “Fly a Flag” will become an annual event in the Cayman Islands, according to protocol coordinator Meloney Syms. The flag was to fly for 24 hours without a break and be lit at night, in keeping with flag-flying protocol, she explained.

This was the third year of the global event, which is promoted by the Commonwealth Secretariat in the UK. More than 850 flags were scheduled to be raised around the world for Commonwealth Day.
