Group needed for single moms

| 14/03/2016

Is there a club or meet-up for single mothers? Also is there a comedy or laughter club? If there is neither, it would be very helpful if someone could take the initiative to start one.

Auntie’s answer: I do not know of any club that specifically caters for single mothers but there are organisations for women as well as other associations that might be good places to expand your social network.

The groups named below (which are all linked to their website or Facebook page) admittedly do not constitute a comprehensive list but are good starting points. I would suggest that you pick a club that appeals to you and go along to a meeting; you never know what connections you might make.

Here are three organisations geared toward women that focus on community-service goals and/or social or business concerns: Business and Professional WomenInternational Ladies Club and 100 Women Who Care.

And here are some others for both men and women covering a range of interests: Optimist ClubToastmasters Club; book clubs – Bookends or Advanced Readers Club – through Books & BooksThe Garden Club; and the Astronomical Society.

Joining a service organisation is another great way to meet people. There are many different volunteer groups that appeal to a variety of causes. Here is a link to contact information for these groups on the government website.

Another list worth browsing is from the Family Resource Centre, though I have to point out that there are names included that will probably not be relevant to your search.

Cayman is also home to a proportionally large amount of churches of all different denominations, easily found by a quick online search.

And, lastly, while there is not a permanent comedy club here, from time to time, promoters will put on a one-off show or even a festival. In addition, it is worth keeping an eye on the various productions that the Cayman Drama Society stages throughout the year at the Prospect Playhouse which range from serious plays to comedies and musicals. Plus, every spring the Cayman National Cultural Foundation offers up “Rundown”, the show that takes a satirical look at life in Cayman. This year’s production is slated to open 12 May for 10 performances.

I hope some of these suggestions have piqued your interest. Perhaps you will be able to meet like-minded people who would work with you to start a single-mother or comedy club.
