New scope captures striking images of sunspot

CNS Local Life(CNS): A new custom eight-inch solar Newtonian telescope designed and constructed by Bill Hrudey, the observatory director at the University College of the Cayman Islands, is helping the local astronomer capture incredible images of the sun. Hrudey said the scope is one of fewer than 25 across the world and the only one in the Caribbean, putting the local observatory on the map when it comes to the study of earth’s closest star.

The telescope will enable the observatory to record and study important solar activity.

This image taken last week shows the emergence of a new spot on the surface of the sun.
