Prisoners and staff start work on the yard

(CNS): As part of Corrections Week activities, HM Cayman Islands Prison Service has assisted neighbours in need. A 99-year-old woman and her 78-year-old daughter live in a home in Northward, but have been unable to do any gardening themselves because of age and health concerns. Subsequently, the yard had become overgrown and hazardous for the ladies even to go outdoors. A concerned relative contacted the prison and asked for help.

On Saturday morning, 23 April, on the eve of the inaugural Corrections Week, a large work party arrived to tackle the yard, equipped with equipment and supplies. The men cut back trees, trimmed plants and cleared up litter passersby had thrown into the yard, filling up a 20-foot skip in the process.

Prison spokesperson Raquel Solomon said, “We were asked to assist and we are happy to where we can, especially those in our community who are vulnerable and in need. The prisoners are also happy to do things outside of their normal routine and help others.”

The ladies of the house were very appreciative, with the older woman even singing for the crew as the men worked.
