Volunteer opportunities in Cayman

| 07/04/2016

I am fairly new to the island but would like to be more involved with the local community. I am not sure what I want to do exactly, but would appreciate some suggestions on organisations I could join.

Auntie’s answer: You are in luck, because for a small island, Cayman has a remarkably large number of groups that serve a variety of needs. I am hoping that you are looking specifically for non-profit organisations that do charitable work. If you are open to anything, then I am letting you know I am steering you in that direction.

Before I get into those options, here is a previous Ask Auntie column (don’t be put off by the title if you are not a single mother) that has a lot of information on all different groups that are active in Cayman: Group needed for single moms

Many people find great satisfaction in becoming members of service organisations and we are home to several that are branches of well-known international groups. There is the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman, Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Central and Rotary Club of Grand Cayman Sunrise, plus a Rotaract Blue for members aged 18-30, along with a Rotary branch on Cayman Brac. The Big Brothers Big Sisters, Red Cross, and the Lions Club (of Grand Cayman and Tropical Gardens) are all represented here.

Local charities include the Cayman Heart Fund, Cayman Islands Cancer Society, Cayman HospiceCare, Meels on Wheels, Feed Our Future and the Pink Ladies.

For animal lovers, the Cayman Islands Humane Society is always looking for volunteers for the thrift store, bookstore, animal shelter and fundraising. CARE, which focuses on a spaying and neutering dogs and cats, needs people to drive the animals to thte vets for surgery and also people to foster unwated pets. The Department of Environment’s Marine Turtle Beach Monitoring programme needs volunteers throughout the summer.

There are more, but I hope this gives you a place to start, and our readers are welcome to add more ideas.

In addition to being a part of something bigger than yourself that is doing good work, as a relatively new resident, joining one of these organisation would be a great way to meet people and network.
