(CNS): The Cayman Islands will join the rest of the world in celebrating International Day of Families on Sunday, 15 May. This year’s theme is “Families, Healthy Lives and Sustainable Futures.” Miriam Foster of the Family Resource Centre (FRC) said of the theme: “FRC, as part of the Department of Counselling Services, regularly comes in contact with persons struggling now with the effects of not having a supportive family, which is something we need to thrive.

“This is not a personal matter, but rather is embedded at the core of society. When families work together and function as a unit, negative behaviours decrease, health is better overall and individuals have a safe place to call home.”

From 15 May, the FRC is inviting families to join its weeklong Fun Family Team Building Challenge. Every day, the centre will release a family challenge theme and outline different ways the challenge can be completed.

Families can send a photo or a video of them completing the challenge by 9pm daily to be eligible for the daily drawing to win a family date night. Daily prizes will include bowling, movie passes, mini golf, dinner gift certificates and the grand prize of a staycation for the whole family.

“Never underestimate the power of fun and connection. Taking time to have fun and slowing down to connect can give your family a surprising boost,” Foster said.

Each year, International Day of Families seeks to showcase the important role of the family unit in ensuring the health and well-being of children. The aim is to create dialogue that could lead to changes in policies and the community, which prioritise family life and support the development of healthy families.
