Two young visitors pose with the plant they potted at the fair

(CNS): The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park, together with the Tourism Attraction Board, hosted their firstEarth Day fair on Sunday, 24 April. Almost 600 people came to show their support for the annual environmental-awareness campaign, which was officially celebrated around the world on 22 April. The day was filled with organic food, drinks, tours and other activities.

The potting station proved popular, with more than 60 children learning how to pot a plant, after which the young people were able to take their plants home for free and care for them.

“It was especially delightful to see the children pot up their plants and take them home,” said John Lawrus, manager of the Botanic Park. “Planting a tree or plant is a simple and great way to show the planet we care. I think we may even have some future gardeners in the making.”

Couxcoux Oil took home a wheelbarrow of used coconut shells to convert into garden fertilizer for the park. “It’s so important that we don’t throw away coconuts, as they have so many wonderful uses,” said Pamela Thompson-Champoux, owner of Coconut Oil Beauty Products. She explained the shells will be burned and then used to make fertilizer.

Cayman Spirits promoted BYOC (bring your own cup), and donated used mini-barrels to the Botanic Park to make fairy gardens for the children.

Rose Myles was unable to attend the event but she still managed to make her traditional organic peppermint candy drops, using the old-school Cayman method.

All of the vendors who participated in the fair displayed the many ways to reduce, reuse and recycle in Cayman.
