Aspiring filmmakers at the recent workshop

(CNS): Voting has opened in the Young Image Makers (YIM) competition with the public able to cast ballots online for their favourite films. The 12 student videos will be posted online; the one with the most votes will be named the winner of the 2016 People’s Choice Award and receive a prize pack courtesy of CayFilm and the Department of Commerce and Investment. Votes can be cast until 11 June.

The YIM competition, hosted by the Cayman National Cultural Foundation (CNCF), provides youngsters, ages 10 to 17, with the opportunity to sharpen their technical film skills and explore their creativity.

The finalists have participated in a workshop, where they learned about tricks and tools of the craft from industry professionals like local filmmakers Judy Singh and Josh Pearl, and had each of their films critiqued.

The young filmmakers are also taking part in an additional video challenge. Each will submit a “Cayman Through My Eyes” (CTME) short film for an opportunity to compete for a summer movie camp experience at the New York Film Academy. The CTME video challenge is a Department of Tourism programme, which encourages young filmmakers to create a positive short film, one to three minutes long, about the Cayman Islands. The department is also this year’s major sponsor for Young Image Makers.

All winners will be announced at a red carpet, film-screening event at the Harquail Theatre on 30 June, kicking off the CayFilm festival weekend.

To vote, go to the CNCF website or visit the CNCF social media platforms – Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (all are @caymanculture)
