Schools tune up for choir competition finals

(CNS): The Lions Club of Grand Cayman will be hosting their second annual all-island Youth Choir Competition, with the finals set for Thursday, 26 May. The preliminary round of the competition was open to all public and private schools in Grand Cayman, and nine schools all together will be competing in three categories at the final event to be held at the Lions Community Centre at 6:30pm.

The finalists are:

Infant category: Cayman Prep & High School, Prospect Primary School, Savannah Primary School and Grace Christian Academy

Junior category: Cayman Prep & High School, Prospect Primary School and Savannah Primary School

Secondary category: Clifton Hunter High School and John Gray High School

Schools will compete for first place in their category, with $500 going towards their school’s music department, as well as the overall title of Youth Choir Competition Champion, which earns an additional $500 for their school.

The final competition will include performances by competing schools and local musicians, along with a raffle drawing of various spot prizes. General admission is $10, and $5 for children under 12 years old. Tickets can be purchased from any Lions Club of Grand Cayman member and at Foster’s Food Fair (Airport) on Saturday, 14 May.

The competition was designed as a fundraising project to aid the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of the Cayman Islands, which aims to makes a positive impact on children and empower them to succeed, through pairing each young person with a role model.

Youth Choir Competition committee chairperson, Lion Janelle Tibbetts, said of the support for BBBS, “Through this fundraising event, we will be able to support this programme and continue to positively impact the youth of the Cayman Islands. In addition to this, the competition allows for the Lions Club of Grand Cayman to advocate for the arts in our local community and give exposure to music programmes within public and private schools.”
