(CNS): The young patients at the Cayman Islands Hospital paediatric ward now have iPads to entertain themselves. Cayman Airways recently donated five of these “gently used” devices, which were initially employed by pilots as electronic flight bags, to the unit. Juan Valerio, supervisor of technical publications at the airline, presented the iPads to the ward. “The paediatric unit was chosen for this donation because we wanted to ensure the young patients on the unit are kept entertained and informed,” Valerio said.

He explained that the idea was born when a member of the Cayman Airways team visited a patient in the unit and saw only a television in the play area. Knowing that the iPads were available, he suggested these be donated to the unit as added entertainment for the kids.

The ward’s nurse manager, Gillian Barlow, in thanking the airline, said that in addition to providing entertainment for the young patients, the iPads will be used as a vehicle to explain therapies and pre-operative procedures.

Cayman Airways has reset the devices and installed age-appropriate games. The paediatric unit will also be installing applications relating to various aspects of the human body and informational pre-operative videos concerning clinical procedures.

“Having the iPads will allow our children to be entertained with things that are familiar as they prepare for surgery or receive the treatments they need,” Barlow said.

Health Services Authority (HSA) CEO Lizzette Yearwood thanked Cayman Airways for their continued support, adding that the iPads will be put to good use and benefit the children who are admitted to the paediatric unit.
