(CNS): Aspiring legal students Aliana Dodds and Oneka Thompson have been awarded the 2016 Appleby Legal Scholarship Programme. In addition to having excellent grades, these two young people demonstrated to the interview panel that they are driven, mature and dedicated. “On behalf of Appleby, I would like to extend our congratulations to Aliana and Oneka,” said managing partner Bryan Hunter.

“Their applications and interviews were very impressive, and we are proud to be awarding them with our legal scholarship this year. I wish them all the best with their future studies, and look forward to seeing them become excellent lawyers.”

Dodds is a student at St Ignatius Catholic School. She said she discovered her passion for law whilst taking her A Levels and decided that she wants to pursue a legal career, in addition to furthering her education in law and its history.

Her achievements include the Rotary Youth Leadership Award 2015, Next Generation Leadership Award 2013, and winning the Campbells A Level Law Moot in 2015.

Oneka Thompson

Thompson, who is taking her A Levels at Cayman Prep and High School, said tapping into her analytical and critical thinking whilst working under pressure is extremely satisfying. She was John Gray High School’s most outstanding student of the year for 2015 and is excited to pursue a career in law, driven by her passion for thought-provoking discussion, which is evident by her participation in interschool debating competitions.

Once both have completed their A Level exams, they will be on a straight path to acquiring their law degrees, whether locally or internationally.

The legal scholarship programme at Appleby covers the cost of tuition, examination fees and textbooks required for study, as well as including a living allowance for students studying abroad, and eight weeks’ work experience each summer.

Since the programme began, 15 scholarship recipients have been called to the Cayman Islands Bar, and an additional four students are currently sponsored by the firm and are at different phases of their study.
