Puzzled by extra lane on roundabout

| 17/08/2016

The roundabout near the Red Bay Primary School – NRA has just completed rebuilding it and have added a third inner lane. I believe many persons would like to know, what is the purpose of the third lane? The design appears that we can park on the roundabout and use the inner lane as an exercise track!

Auntie’s answer: Before you throw on a tracksuit and slip into your running shoes, read on. The extra lane is definitely not for a bit of exercise.

Here is how a representative of the National Roads Authority (NRA) explained the additional lane: “The purpose of the third lane is to accommodate the future widening of the East West Arterial; we did it at this stage to avoid having to go back in and reconstruct again.”

As far as I’m concerned, any proactive move when it comes to building roads should be lauded, especially if that prevents another round of construction and subsequent traffic issues and congestion.

If you would like to know more about the Red Bay Roundabout construction, as well as roadworks on the Esterley Tibbetts and Linford Pierson highways, below is a government video explaining the plans:

Thanks Auntie for getting the answers we seek, A better use of this waste of road construction would have been to continue the East West arterial towards Lower valley.

What 3rd lane? It is still a 2 lane round-about with a ‘ marked shoulder ‘ on the centre.
The improvements appear to have made a definite difference when using the round-about.
Good work by the NRA & other departments involved

Seems to be a suspiciously large amount of pointless road building going on, like all the tarmacing of the verges past Bodden Town – totally useless so why are they doing it?

Give me strength, people here can’t even use a two lane roundabout correctly what hopes are there that they can master a three lane one.

I bet my first born child that this will be the most accident prone roundabout on island.

Three lane roundabouts only work when people know how to use them correctly like anything in this life. The NRA sending out flyers will not educate these people. Maybe print on the back on a beer bottle would be a better solution.

Would the dufus who thought this would work please stand up?

I came to conclusion that there is such a thing as doing everything Caymanian way. First do, then think, then fix or re-do what was done in the first place. From installing traffic lights, signs, airpot parking, expanding/extending roads, renewing something online or new roundabout. Doing things right the first time is just not a Caymanian thing. I thought it was hilarious when they started work on Walkers road and then stopped it to obtain some permits.
