(CNS): A dozen young people were recognised for their efforts and accomplishments at the Proud of Them (PoT) reception held at the George Town Yacht Club on Wednesday, 3 August 2016. Minister of Youth Osbourne Bodden and Minister of Education Tara Rivers presented certificates as well as $500 cash stipends to the honourees. The recipients for round six of the youth-recognition programme are Felicia Connor (for academics and sports), Channah Connor (community service), Bruce Gordon (cultural excellence), and Kasinda McField, David Forbes, Derricka Neysmith, Giselle Ebanks, Tishan Crowe, Vanessa Williams, Ayanna Davis-Eden, Diarra Hoyte and Ethan Whittaker (all for academics).

“I am truly in awe of these young people,” Bodden said. “The selection committee had quite the challenge in narrowing down the final 12, but that shows how high-achieving our young people are – and that’s what this programme is all about.”

Among the challenges the 12 finalists have faced are overcoming disabilities, pursuing unconventional career paths and making it as a young mother. The government will be publicising their individual profiles.

This latest group of honourees was chosen from 72 young people nominated by their friends, acquaintances and community members. Members of the public submitted nominations to recognise achievers who are reaching new heights in academics, sports, career, culture, business and community service.

During the reception Rev. Donovan Myers, chairman of the National Youth Commission, acknowledged their hard work and dedication and reminded them all how important it is to give back to their community.

“We recognise the past achievements you’ve made, and we continue to encourage you for the future,” he said. “Always be mindful of the fact that you are on a constant journey, and we are glad to accompany you on this journey.”

At the end of the reception, attendees previewed the artwork for the billboards that will soon feature the finalists, to be placed in locations across Grand Cayman for six months.

The PoT youth-empowerment initiative began in 2012 to highlight the work of young people, and showcase their initiative and positive attitudes. Since then, more than 60 young men and women have been recognised for their efforts.
