Miss Teen Cayman Islands Liana DaCosta

(CNS): Liana DaCosta has been crowned Miss Teen Cayman Islands for 2016, at a pageant held Saturday, 27 August at the Lions Centre. The 16-year-old from Bodden Town also took home the awards for academic excellence, Miss Photogenic and best in gown. The contest returned after a three-year hiatus, with seven young women taking part.

The pageant organising committee praised the contestants in a press release, saying, “All these young ladies are winners in our eyes. We knew where they have come from to arrive to this point. We saw them bloom from shy unsure girls to bold and confident young women. We all cried during their talent sections as we were truly impressed and proud just like their parents must have been”.

Nerissa McLaughlin was first runner up and Jada Ramoon second runner up. There were several awards given out on the evening but due to a delay those for best smile (Kevie-Ann Peirre from Bodden Town) and best legs (Maya Smith from North Side) were not announced until the day after the pageant.

For the talent portion of the evening, DaCosta entertained with a Broadway act. Smith was the first contestant ever to play the saxophone. Other talents on display were singing (a rendition of “Lost Boys” by Aleica McDonald), video production (highlighting how depression can affect one’s life by Ramoon), dancing (Nerissa McLaughlin), steel pan (Peirre) and reciting a monologue (Kayleigh McLaughlin).

The new Miss Teen will receive a four-year scholarship from the Ministry of Education that will cover costs for two years locally and two years overseas at the college of her choice.

An award for best legs are you kidding me? Its not like any of them chose what body parts they get. Miss teen should be based on personality alone.
