Cayman karaoke champ to be crowned

CNS Local Life(CNS): After five weeks of competition, a group of karaoke singers is facing off Friday, 26 August, with one hoping to be named Cayman Karaoke Idol. Over the course of the contest, the top four singers at each session earned a spot in the finals, which are being held at the Hard Rock Café, starting at 7pm.

“We want to keep the contestants on their toes,” said Rooster 101’s afternoon DJ Doug Dodds, who is hosting the event. “Competitors will be pulling the names of the songs they will sing from a hat – pop, country and soul. They’ll be singing their out-of-the-hat picks, not just what they’re comfortable with. It’s a way to determine who’s got the talent.”

The winner of the championship round will receive airfare for two to Tampa, three nights at a hotel and tickets to see Carrie Underwood in concert. Additionally, the winner’s demo tape will be handed to guest judge and Nashville Warner Brothers Records executive, Tom Starr, who has 20 years of experience with various major labels, representing many top-selling bands and artists.

Starr is the former vice president of Electra Records and owner and president of Tom Starr entertainment. He has worked with such artists as Sting, Pink, Eminem, Gwen Stefani, U2 and Shakira. This will be his first visit to Cayman.

“I am excited to hear the local talent from Cayman,” he said. “Talent isn’t just in Nashville, New York, or Los Angeles. Breakthrough artists can come from anywhere. We’ve just got to be in the right place at the right time. I’m hoping lightning strikes Friday in Cayman.”

In addition to Starr, there are three local judges: Hurley’s Media radio DJ Jason Howard, and musicians Stuart Wilson and Barefoot Man.
