Education Minister Tara Rivers talks with CIFEC students at careers fair

(CNS Local Life): The Cayman Islands Further Education Centre (CIFEC) has been hosting a careers fair to support its year 12 internship programme. The two-day event finishes up today (Friday, 16 September) in the CIFEC library at the Walkers Road school. Around 200 students have been participating, as well as representatives from various employment sectors: banking, hospitality, government and associated entities, legal, finance, childcare, motor vehicle maintenance and repair, and construction.

The internship programme is for students in the last year of high school, typically aged 15 to 17 years old, and provides valuable work skills and ethics to enable students to succeed in the workforce after graduating. It will run throughout the current school year, twice a week, until April 2017.

Students attending the careers fair have been encouraged to make excellent first impressions to help them secure internships.

Education Minister Tara Rivers, who attended the first day of the event, said she was impressed by the large turnout of both students and employers. She added she was gratified to see increasing numbers of local businesses willing to invest in the students and take them on as interns.

“Preparing our students for future job and career opportunities must be a collaborative effort by the government, schools and the business community,” she said. “I am also very pleased by the positive attitudes displayed by the students at the careers fair and their increased level of preparedness this year, which did not go unnoticed by many of the employers that I spoke to.

“Our students are our future, and we must all work together to help them succeed to become positive contributors to our economy and society as a whole.”
