Community urged to take a stand against bullying

CNS Local Life(CNS Local Life): The Family Resource Centre (FRC) is partnering with several businesses to support the “Stand up to Bullying” campaign. As part of Bullying Prevention Awareness Month, the FRC will be going into schools throughout October and doing assemblies about bullying and its consequences along with offering prevention advice. Burger King, Davenport Development and DART are the title sponsors of the campaign and Hurley’s Media will be promoting it on radio stations Z99 and Irie FM through 28 October.

“Bullying is a growing problem around the world, including right here in Cayman. With the Stand up to Bullying campaign, you can join the Family Resource Centre and Hurley’s Media this year in raising awareness of bullying and offering strategies to overcome this problem,” said Tina Trumbach, Hurley’s Media marketing and public relations manager.

The series of school outreach meetings seek to educate students, parents and teachers. The first assembly took place on Monday, 26 September at Hope Academy, and the next will be on Tuesday, 4 October at John Gray High School with Dolphin Academy.

Students can also request a school presentation at their high school. The FRC will be offering an assembly that can be booked through 19 October.

As part of the campaign, two competitions are running for local students, aged 11-17, to win prizes, with an entry deadline of 31 October. They can submit a song they produced about anti-bullying or they can enter the poster design competition. The winner of each contest will win a prize from FLOW.

Participants in the anti-bullying poster competition can submit their designs by emailing the FRC. The grand-prize winner’s poster will be used as the Family Resource Centre’s official anti-bullying campaign promotion.

For the song competition, students can email Hurley’s Media  with their entry, in an MP3 format. The grand-prize winner will get a chance to work with local artist Josh Pearl and have his or her song professionally recorded.

Members of the public can support the campaign by purchasing a “STOOD UP” T-shirt, which costs $10 for adults and $5 for children. Sizes are only guaranteed if ordered by 7 October.

The Family Resource Centre is urging members of the public to wear their T-shirts on Stand Up Day, 14 October. Schools and offices are also welcome to arrange a dress down day for that date.
